Judo and the Bridges Between Cultures in the Vision of Matsumae Sensei

9月末から10月にかけてポーランド・グダニスクで開催され、学園の付属高校柔道部の選抜チームも参加した国際柔道キャンプ「Camp BOSEI」。会場では、哲学・宗教学の世界的研究者で、オックスフォード大学教授のピーター・ペトコフ博士の講演も行われた＝本紙11／1号既報。

ニコライ・グルントヴィに関する論文から学園の創立者・松前重義博士を知り、創立者に関するの研究に取り組むペトコフ博士は、柔道キャンプの名称に「BOSEI」と冠していることに強い関心を持ち、同大柔道部のメンバーと共に会場に駆け付けた。

ペトコフ博士による講演『Judo and the Bridges Between Cultures in the Vision of Matsumae Sensei』の内容を紹介する。

I am deeply moved and honoured to be asked to speak at this Bosei Camp about S Matsumae Sensei who has been for quite a while one of my heroes.

In the Bosei dojo in Tokyo there is a calligraphy which says

:’Perserevance, character, hope.’ This is a text which Matsumae sensei borrowed from St Paul’s Epistle to the Romans:’ Suffering produces perseverance, perseverance-character, and character-hope.’

 

Matsumae Sensei, the founder of Tokai University and the fourth and perhaps the most visionary President of IJF is the man who shaped with his vision what is to become modern judo. In order to understand the legacy of Matsumae and more importantly the reason we are all here today we need to consider Matsumae’s key spiritual and intellectual roots which shaped his own formation and the ethos of Tokai University and the IJF under his leadership. While Matsumae was Japanese at his core in more than one ways he was deeply influenced by a man who lived very far from Japan but not so far away from where we are now. He was the Nikolai Grundtvig, A Danish pastor, a Christian theologian and an educational pioneer who lived in the eighteenth and the nineteenth century and shaped profoundly Denmark with his ideas, hymns and folk high schools which still exist today dedicated not to degrees but to the opening up of young people to the world. His educational ideas radicalised the Danes’ perception of themselves and their connection with the world. In his works Grundtvik spoke about building of bridges between cultures where all cultures – developed and indigenous would meet as equals in their ability to receive each other’s gifts. Matsumae embraced Grundtvik’s ideas and incorporated them into the blueprint of Tokai as an educational foundation dedicated to the building of bridges between cultures. I am sure that while following patiently and politely my speech you wonder what does this all have anything to do with judo which is supposedly the main reason why are we all here. And this would certainly be a very sensible question. The thing is that everything I have just said is the reasons we are here today doing judo and the ways we are doing judo together, the reason my dear friend Yamaguchi sensei and the mighty group of Japanese judo players and instructors are here.

In Matsumae’s vision judo place a very central role in his educational and cultural imaginations. He sees judo as an agency for change through the building of cultural bridges between countries as much as arts and humanities, engineering, social and life sciences do that. This makes a rather programmatic the semi-anecdotal episode in his memoirs that when as a young man he was asked to give up judo in order to focus on his studies he threatened not to return to school if he has to give up judo. Later in life when he accepted his role as the fourth　president of IJF he articulated clearly his vision of judo as a form of a soft power which would enable Japan to find its authentic voice and tools to reconnect with the world and leave its mark as an agent for peace, justice and reconciliation. This vision has been projected with his great mentee Yamashita Sensei and most recently through the work of Inoue Sensei and through their foundations Judo for Peace and its successor JUDOs – an agency for change from Israel and Palestine, through Nanking in China all the way to Gdansk in Poland where Solidarity Movement started something which has changed the map of Eastern Europe and the whole Soviet block. This is not just a desperate effort to make judo into more than a major athletic discipline with a status of an Olympic sport. It is linked with Matsumae’s vision about an interconnected human family where we build bridges to meet as equals. This is reflected in his effort to push boundaries – from conflict with Kodokan and in the breaking of the monopoly of Kodokan to award black belts and in his efforts to bring women’s judo to the Olympics. The tension between local and global is a synthesis which Matsumae has developed through the influences from Gruntdvig and judo plays a very important part in the centre of this synthesis. The Biblical text on the wall of Bosei dojo connects Matsumae’s vision and personal faith and also represents an unexpected link between Christianity and Bushido which a number of Japanese Christian theologians explored in the aftermath of the Meiji restoration. Christianity is seen as the form which recaptures concerns about human dignity, honour and humility which Japan has lost through the process of modernization. This ‘cultural appropriation’ of Christianity resonates Grundtvik’sconcern about the ways Christian missionaries obliterate indigenous cultures reminding his readers that indigenous cultures must be free to receive the good news on their own terms. Matsumae’s synthesis between Bushido and Christianity, between Japan and the world inspired by his Danish intellectual influences through Japanese figures such as Uchimura remain central to the mission Tokai and judo continue to play today. This is a mission of peace through cultural encounters, sharing of excellence, commitment to human dignity and a vision of the future rooted in critical and reflective sense of history, through keeping memory alive and reactivated.

 

By being here we have become part of this vision. We are attending a camp which reminds us of history – from the start of World War II at Westerplatte to the end of the Communism which began at the Gdansk shipyards. By paying this homage to Polish history the legacy of Bosei and Matsumae meets the legacy of the prophets of Polish freedom.

As we are here today we are not simply testing our judo skills. We partake in Matsumae sensei’s vision for a better world. Unity in diversity, these were the themes my dear friend Yamaguchi shared with us as fine haikus , as a reflective mokuso at the end of each session and perhaps many of us were too tired to notice that in a magical way he was connecting us through an invisible thread with the past visions of Tokai’s founder and with his vision for the future. Let us now bow to the founder of Tokai and to the all great senseis who continue his mission and then bow to their students who obediently follow in their steps.

ここにいることで、私たちはこのビジョンの一部になりました。私たちはヴェステルプラッテから始まった第二次世界大戦から、グダニスクの造船所で始まった共産主義の終わりまでの歴史を思い起こさせるキャンプに参加しています。ポーランドの歴史に敬意を表することで、望星と松前の遺産がポーランドの自由の預言者たちの遺産と出会うことになります。

今日私たちがここにいるということは、単に柔道の技術を試しているのではありません。私たちはよりよい世界を目指す松前先生のビジョンに参加しているのです。多様性の中の相互理解、これらは私の親愛なる友人である山口が、各セッションの黙想の後で共有してくれたテーマでした。練習後で皆さん疲れていたかもしれませんが、彼は魔法のように私たちを過去の東海大学の創立者のビジョンや将来のビジョンを見えない糸で見事につなぎ合わせていました。では、東海大学創立者と彼の使命を継承する偉大な先生方に感謝し、教えに忠実に従う彼らの教え子たちに敬意をこめた礼をしましょう。
